The first impression of anything or anyone is the initial feeling you will have about someone or something. Think about it, how do we give a good first impression or how does something (like an object) give a good first impression? Appearance is everything but we should never base our full feelings on our first impression. We will take the first impression we get into consideration, but we should never create an idea of how someone is until we truly get to know them. It’s like the old saying goes; never judge a book on its cover. Do you judge someone or something just on their appearance?
Getting the wrong impression.
Most people will judge someone on their appearance. Within the first three to thirty seconds most people will have a whole idea about someone without even talking to them. So, when the term that our parents use to say; dress to impress, is technically saying dress to create a good first impression. Think about this a person walks in a restaurant looking all dirty and greasy like he has been working in an auto shop (your impression is he is a mechanic). A second person walks into the same restaurant dressed in a very nice suit and looks like he works in an office (from your impression he might be a higher up). Which person are you likely going to talk to? If you picked the guy in suit, you would find out he has no job but likes acting like he is some big shot. The other guy owns a successful business but was helping a friend fix their car and is willing to help anyone in need. So sometimes our first impressions can be wrong of someone.
How does an object create a first impression?
Technically objects do not create the first impression, but advertisements or packaging do. Packaging and advertisements can make us think we need or want something. We might not even know what something is or how it works but if the packaging or advertisement looks pleasing enough, we will want it either way. This is usually how they get kids to want their product or toy and get the parents to buy it for them. This really work around the holidays when parents are trying to buy gifts for children or other adults. Have you bought or wanted something because of its packaging or advertisement?
Does first impression really work?
First impression really does work. Most people will start judging someone between three and thirty seconds of just seeing them walk through a door or into a room. Sometimes it’s pretty sad that you will not talk to someone because the way they walk, look, and dress. We should always give everyone a fair chance and not be so quick to judge someone. We really should never judge anyone. We can form our own opinions about someone (which should be done after we at least talk to them), but we should never judge them. If you give someone a chance you might discover your new best friend or someone you really get along with if you just give them a chance. Do you find yourself judging or coming up with an impression of someone by the way they look, dress, walk, or talk?
Keys to making a great first impression.
Obviously, appearance is everything. You want to make sure you are very well dressed for whatever the occasion is. Watch your body language and how you walk. Most people watch your posture and how quick you walk or move. Don’t forget to smile, confidence is everything. You typically have three to thirty seconds to impress anyone who sees you.
