In the world of all first responders, we all have superstitions and rules we must follow to not piss off the EMS Gods. While deep down we know this is fictional we still follow these rules. Anytime someone breaks a rule, or something happens the worst of the worst is bound to happen.
The “Q” word
First responders will never say the “Q” word (quiet). If you say to a first responder, I hope your day is nice and quiet; you can bet it’s going to be the busiest day of your life. Never say it’s sure quiet today because that will also trigger it to be the busiest day.
Bragging
If you brag how great you are at your job or just how awesome you are in general; you can bet that will be put to the test. In fact, the test will be so great you will fall flat on your ass (not literally), and you will look like a fool. It’s okay to be great at what you do but never brag about it.
Over prepare or under prepare
If you over prepare for a call, you can bet that you will not need any of the stuff you brought in. Same goes if you under prepare, if you bring the bare minimum into a call, you can bet you will need to run back out to the ambulance to get more supplies or equipment.
Planning something after work
In EMS you can never plan something after work. Even if you plan it 2 hours after you are off you can bet you will not make it to your plans. You will get a call near your off time, and you will be held over way past your off time.
Ording food and eating
While all first responders get hungry on shift as anyone does at work, you will be the busiest around the time you are eating. That food you just ordered and paid for, yeah you will have to come back for that because you now have an emergency call to go to. Same goes for when you warm up your food to eat. It will now be cold because you thought you were going to eat a warm meal.
Tired or don’t feel well
Ever been sick, tired, just wanting to rest your eyes? Well, if that happens in EMS then you can bet you will not stop running on emergency call after emergency call.
Getting that feeling
Ever get a feeling that something just isn’t right or normal. In EMS that probably means the EMS Gods hate you today and your life will suck while on shift.
Underestimating your calls
Never underestimate your call. If you get a call that someone is not feeling well or just wants to go to the hospital, you can bet it will be something totally different. It will probably be someone having something serious like stroke, seizures, or death.
Taking patients for granted
Let’s say you take patient X to dialysis 3 times a week. We know them well and every other day it’s the same old with them. Never get relaxed with these patients we learn to know. The minute you drop your guard or take it for granted they will get sick or die on you.
Moving the ambulance
If you have been sitting for more than a couple of hours and you need to go to the bathroom or get a bite to eat, just don’t! The second you try to move the ambulance you will get an emergency call.
Bathroom
We have all been to the point where we must go to the bathroom like now or we will piss our pants. Well, if you let it get to that point you can bet you will get CPR call and you will be stuck on scene for at least 35-45 minutes. During that time, you will not be able to use the bathroom.
You will learn the EMS Gods hate you and will do anything to make your life suck while on shift.
