Throughout life we must learn to budget and save money. To be financially stable we must create a budget for ourselves. Having a budget and savings helps us plan for the future and helps us buy bigger ticket items. Budgeting and saving can help us prepare for the unexpected expenses that happen throughout life. Life can be full of surprises; money shouldn’t be one of them if we properly budget and save. Do you handle the finances in your home?

Learning to save and budget.

Parents should teach their children from a young age about saving money. They should be taught that if you do chores and work hard you will be rewarded (earn) money. The more you work or do chores the more money you will earn. Parents then can teach their children about saving the money they earn. If they want a toy or game, they need to save their money. They can learn to figure out how much work they will need to do to have enough money. We all want to spoil our children and buy them everything they want. Honestly, we are doing more harm than good. We need to teach children the value of money and what it takes to earn money. With this they will learn to have responsibility with money. Do you teach your children about earning and saving money?

Learning to budget.

One thing that is never taught or stressed enough is how to create a budget and stick to it. When we get into our young adult age, we think we know about our finances. We like to think we know how to budget and save. Many young adults who are not strong budgeters have a hard time saving a large amount of money. Everyone likes new things, but we must have discipline with our spending. Are you able to save up a large amount of money or do you spend money as soon as you put money into savings?

Saving for something big!

There will be many times throughout your lifetime that you will want to purchase a big-ticket item. Some items we do not need to take a line of credit you can save up money and buy them out right. For example, saving money for a cruise vacation or new piece of furniture. While we may not have the money on hand we will need to save and budget for the big-ticket item. Having a reason to save money and a financial goal can help us work really hard for something we want. It also makes it easier to save money knowing we have an end goal that will make it worth it. Do you plan and save for big-ticket items?

The unexpected expenses.

No matter how much we try to prepare ourselves, things sometimes just happen. Things break, people or animals get sick or hurt, and we now have an unexpected thing we must pay for. Planning ourselves financially is one way we can help conquer the unexpected expenses. Obviously, we never plan for this stuff to happen, but we must be financially prepared if possible. Sometimes putting extra money away into a savings especially for a “rainy day” or unexpected expenses can be harder than said. Do you have a plan or keep extra savings for unexpected expenses?

My financial plans.

When I was young my parents stressed about saving and only spending what you earn. When I got into college, I thought I knew how to properly deal with finances and ended up learning credit cards can be your worse enemy. As I got older, I did get a little wiser and now have a better budget and have money put away for those unexpected expenses. I learned that just putting a little money away and pretending it doesn’t exist has helped me to save more. Sometimes the best way to learn something is to learn it the hard way which on many things I have done.

How have you learned to handle your finances over the years?
