Everyone has a dream job or something they want to be when they grow up. The question of what you want to be when you grow up has been asked since elementary school. As the years progress and we become smarter and grow, our dream job changes. When we are young, we feel anything is possible and all jobs are equal (money wise). Things change and we change, we learn all jobs do not make the same and our interests change. Plus, as we learn we realize there are more opportunities out there than we could have imagined when we were young. Do you remember being asked what you wanted to be when you grew up in elementary school?
Having your first dream job goal.
In elementary school life was simple, although we thought our parents had it easy because he still had homework and spelling tests. We didn’t know what it would take to become a lawyer or doctor, we thought you just said this is what you want to be and boom you were just that. Our parents always told us that we must do good in school if we want to do our dream job. Some kids that worked for them to try others were still thinking they just had to get through school, and they would just work at their dream job. Did your parents push you hard so you could work at your dream job?
Dreams change and things change, including us.
As we get older and get into high school, we realize that life isn’t so easy or simple. We cannot just say I want to be an accountant and after school I am an accountant. We now must plan to go to college and work towards a dream job. But if we are going to go to college and work hard towards something our dream job from our childhood changes. We now think about college cost to how much money we can make yet doing something we will like. Sometimes college length plays a role with us choosing which dream job we want. Did college or money make you change your dream job?
Working hard pays off!
If we put our mind to it and work hard and dream job is possible. Some people are not willing to go the extra length to do exactly what they want to do. It’s not because they are lazy, well not everyone (I am sure there are a few that were), sometimes some people just do okay in school, or they have a hard time. Everyone has their challenges and sometimes people feel these challenges are too great to overcome so they settle for less. Have challenges affected your dream job?
Dreams influenced by others.
Sometimes our dreams and what we want in life are influenced by others, such as parents, grandparents, and even friends. Our elders want the best for us and sometimes they have strong influences on us. They will push us so we “don’t make the same mistake as them”. But what mistakes did they make? It’s what makes them who they are! Parents and friends can be the biggest influence on us. They want us to be what they are or do the same thing they are doing. It’s not a bad thing unless our true dreams and beliefs are different. One thing we must remember is this is our life, and we must do what is right for us. My dream jobs.
When I was in elementary school and probably into middle school my dream job was a garbage man. I think the thing that I was most fascinated with is the garbage truck could crush stuff and the garbage men were always happy and friendly. At least from my eyes when I would visit them at the end of my driveway when I was young. Once I got into high school my father pushed me into auto mechanics. Making me believe if I was good enough, I could be a Dodge Viper mechanic at the tech center. I worked hard through high school learning auto mechanics. When college came around, I went through the Chrysler Apprenticeship Program (CAP). When I graduated the market crashed and the job Chrysler promised was no longer there. After many different types of jobs and more college I woke up and started chasing my dream after losing my grandmother to cancer. I decided to leave a good paying job at General Motors and started an entry level job in Emergency Medical Services (EMS). This was my true dream job!
During college I did have a thought that it would be cool to be a doctor, but I could not see the cost and amount of college I would need to go through to be worth it for me. Which now I am glad I didn’t do because I did work in a hospital for 6 months and it was defiantly not for me. After working in EMS, I like being able to do my own thing and not having someone over me.
